Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (Upper Elbe Transport Association), Dresden
Experience a special journey ...
In hardly any other region of Germany can such impressive landscapes be explored by using unusual and historic means of transport as in the Upper Elbe Valley. A journey on these unique vehicles is simply its own reward. You will get to know an attractive part of Saxony in an exceptional way: on narrow gauge, a suspension railway, tracks, by water or on four wheels. Oberelbe Tours, our travel agency, is pleased to give information on prices and timetables, travel advice, interesting trips or group offers.
One option is to go on a ride on the steam-driven Lößnitzgrundbahn railway running from Radebeul, through the romantic Lößnitzgrund valley, past the Moritzburg pond landscape, to the town of Radeburg, the birthplace of Heinrich Zille. Another railway to enjoy the atmosphere of narrow gauge rail travel is the Weißeritztalbahn, passing through the romantic Rabenauer Grund valley in the Eastern Ore Mountains. A guided tour on a Meißen City Bus is a comfortable way to combine a visit to the porcelain manufactory with the Old Town Meißen and the Castle hill (Burgberg). In Dresden, at Körnerplatz square, you can take the oldest suspension railway in the world to go up to Loschwitzer Höhe, where you will have an outstanding panorama view. Back at Körnerplatz square, the funicular railway, opened in 1895, goes up to the district of Weißer Hirsch, an exclusive residential area in Dresden. The historic trams of the Kirnitzschtalbahn tram line run through the wild romantic Kirnitzschtal valley, from Bad Schandau health resort to Lichtenhainer Wasserfall (waterfall) in Saxon Switzerland – simply a unique experience. Or, take a ferry boat trip from Bad Schandau to Hrensko, in Bohemian Switzerland, to experience the outstanding rock formations there from an unusual perspective.
