Description

A diversified city with attractive surroundings …

A visit to Freital offers a wonderful mix of art, mining, sports and wine - and not to forget, the steam-powered Weißeritztalbahn railway. Its starting point is at Freital-Hainsberg station. The numerous attractions and recreational activities that the city has to offer are surrounded by a picturesque countryside and are still in the vicinity of Dresden. The proximity to the art capital and the excellent transport connections with the surrounding area are particularly attractive for visitors who are looking for relaxation away from mass tourism, in a pleasant and quiet place at affordable prices. Burgk castle is certainly one attraction you should not miss when staying in Freital. It was the residence of the so-called coal baron (Kohlebaron) and mine owner, Freiherr (baron) Dathe von Burgk. The castle houses one of Saxony’s largest non-governmental museums, containing the Municipal Collections on a wide range of subjects. Visitors will get insights into the history of mining, among others in a mining demonstration plant featuring the first electric mining locomotive - the “Dorothea” of 1882 - and a visitors’ mine. The museum also houses the Art Collections Freital with paintings by Otto Dix along with works of the “Dresdner Malschule” (the Dresden Painting School) of the 19th and 20th centuries. Another attraction is the Saxon Porcelain Manufactory of Dresden, situated in Freital-Potschappel. Here you will get insights into the craft of porcelain making and can purchase valuable items at the manufactory’s shop.

Or, if you like walking and hiking in beautiful nature, we recommend you take a trip to Rabenauer Grund - a wild, romantic valley with the Weißeritztalbahn railway winding through it. And on a train ride you can combine many interesting tours. +/Moreover, anyone who appreciates fine wines will enjoy a vineyard tour, a wine fest in autumn or wine tasting in the wine cellar of the Gut Pesterwitz winery, cultivating Saxony’s highest vineyard.
