Description
The Middle German transport system covers the three federate states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The area of the MDV includes the cities of Halle and Leipzig; as well as the districts of Leipzig, North Saxony, Saalekreis, Burgenlandkreis, and Altenburger Land. Thus, the MDV covers 2,900 sq mi (7,515 km²) with a population of 1.7 million people. From late 2019, also the administrative districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg as well as the city of Dessau-Roßlau can be reached by train with an MDV ticket. Our 13 transportation companies, linking two cities to the surrounding towns and rural areas, therefore, are an important location factor in the area covered by our transport system. Leipzig City Tunnel, the Middle German S-Bahn (suburban) railway network, and other regional railway axes form the transport backbone. In addition, we at the MDV have developed the premium brand of PlusBus to link our region to the S-Bahn.
