We from the Erzgebirgsbahn railway welcome you to our gorgeous holiday region. DB RegioNetz Erzgebirgsbahn (EGB) is a subsidiary of Deutschen Bahn and partner in the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS) transport association. Our company connects the agglomeration around Chemnitz and Zwickau with the ridge region of the Central and Western Ore Mountains on four railway lines: Chemnitz – Aue, Zwickau – Johanngeorgenstadt; Chemnitz – Olbernhau-Grünthal / Marienberg; and Chemnitz - Bärenstein / Weipert; with a total length of 217 km (135 mi) and 74 stations or flagstops. Sixteen modern railcars of series 642 run on these lines in a regular interval with a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 m.p.h.). Our comfortable trains with short journey times, accessible for people with disabilities, guarantee relaxing and easy access to the region and even service the towns of Karlovy Vary and Chomutov in the Czech Republic at weekends.
You can easily reach several tourist attractions and areas great for hiking such as Annaberg-Buchholz, Schwarzenberg, Olbernhau or Johanngeorgenstadt. Enjoy enchanting countryside, amazing castles or Christmas markets full of great atmosphere. We can also promise you that the routing of the Erzgebirgsbahn railway itself is as diversified as the landscape of the Ore Mountains. In many places, the routes run along mountain rivers, through tunnels and narrow valleys or along sheer rock walls. Our special excursions on the Annaberg-Buchholz – Schwarzenberg (BSg) route, which is not normally in service, have become increasingly popular. The Erzgebirgsbahn railway company, commissioned by the Verkehrsverbundes Mittelsachsen (VMS) transport association, started operating the Augustusburg cable railway in 2006 after its extensive restoration. The cable railway has been providing a connection of the Erdmannsdorf-Augustusburg flagstop with the town of Augustusburg for 100 years. Track length is 1,240m and height difference is 168m. The journey up and down takes eight minutes.
